About this course

Move from everyday commands to server ownership: installation, local accounts, packages, services, network configuration, storage and backup. Exercises focus on persistent configuration and routine operating procedures.

Who this is for

Junior system administrators, infrastructure support engineers and developers responsible for Linux servers.

Before you start

Linux command-line skills, basic file permissions and introductory IP networking.

Applied learning outcome

Commission a Linux server and prove that its services survive a reboot

Deliver a server build record, account and service configuration, persistent storage mount, scheduled backup and a verified restore procedure.

Curriculum

Course content

8 modules · 8 topics

Course-specific syllabus and practical exercises. Lab release, access arrangements and final delivery scope are confirmed before enrolment.

01

Installation and operating baseline

  • Plan VM resources, partitions and the hostname.
  • Record release information, time settings and the initial configuration.

Practical exerciseinstall a server VM and create an operating baseline.

02

Accounts, groups and delegated administration

  • Manage local users, supplementary groups and account expiry.
  • Set shared-directory permissions and configure limited sudo access.

Practical exerciseprovision an operations group with a documented access model.

03

Packages, repositories and updates

  • Use the distribution package manager to inspect, install and remove packages.
  • Understand repository trust, dependency resolution and update planning.

Practical exerciseinstall a service package and record the update and rollback considerations.

04

systemd services and scheduled work

  • Use systemctl to inspect, enable and manage services.
  • Read journals and compare cron with systemd timers.

Practical exerciseconfigure a managed service and a scheduled housekeeping task.

05

Persistent network configuration

  • Set addresses, routes and DNS using the distribution network tooling.
  • Configure SSH access and inspect listening sockets with ss.

Practical exercisemake remote administration work after a server reboot.

06

Local disks, filesystems and LVM

  • Create practice partitions and explain physical volumes, volume groups and logical volumes.
  • Create filesystems and configure persistent mounts with UUIDs.

Practical exerciseattach a data disk, create a logical volume and validate its mount.

07

Backup, restore and routine monitoring

  • Compare file-level backup, synchronisation and archive workflows.
  • Inspect disk capacity, memory pressure, service health and log rotation.

Practical exerciseback up application data and restore a deleted practice file.

08

Boot recovery and operational handover

  • Recognise boot targets, failed services and invalid mount configurations.
  • Document recovery commands and validate configuration after reboot.

Practical exerciserecover a deliberately broken service or mount and hand over the server.
