About this course
Deepen an existing administrator skill set through service dependencies, resource isolation, advanced storage, identity integration, network design and failure analysis. The emphasis is explaining system behaviour and controlling configuration changes.
Who this is for
Linux administrators and platform engineers with experience maintaining running servers.
Before you start
Practical administration of users, systemd services, SSH, filesystems and LVM. This course assumes the Linux System Administration outcomes.
Design and recover an isolated application service with documented resource and storage controls
Build a multi-service lab, apply systemd limits, configure a storage layout and network boundary, then diagnose injected faults and document a tested recovery path.
Course content
Course-specific syllabus and practical exercises. Lab release, access arrangements and final delivery scope are confirmed before enrolment.
01Boot chain, kernel and recovery internals
+
- Trace firmware, bootloader, initramfs, kernel and systemd responsibilities.
- Inspect kernel modules, boot arguments and emergency targets.
Practical exercisediagnose a boot-stage fault in a snapshot-backed VM.
02systemd unit design and dependencies
+
- Write service units with ordering, dependency and restart policies.
- Use drop-ins, environment files and journal fields to diagnose unit behaviour.
Practical exerciseimplement an application unit with dependency and restart tests.
03Resource isolation with cgroups and namespaces
+
- Understand process, mount and network namespace boundaries.
- Apply CPU, memory and task controls through systemd resource settings.
Practical exerciseconstrain a test workload and measure the effect on a neighbouring service.
04Advanced storage and data paths
+
- Compare LVM layouts, snapshots, software RAID and filesystem characteristics.
- Inspect I/O paths, mount options and capacity-growth risks.
Practical exerciseextend a test storage layout and verify data integrity.
05Multi-interface networking and packet flow
+
- Work through routing tables, bridges, bonds and VLAN concepts.
- Trace traffic through interface, route and firewall decisions.
Practical exercisebuild a segmented virtual network and isolate a routing error.
06Central identity and privilege boundaries
+
- Explain PAM, NSS and directory-backed identity using SSSD concepts.
- Plan service identities, delegated privilege and credential lifecycle.
Practical exercisetroubleshoot an authentication failure in a controlled identity scenario.
07Diagnostics, tracing and controlled changes
+
- Correlate journal events, process state and open files.
- Use strace, lsof and system metrics to test a failure hypothesis.
Practical exerciseidentify a file-access or process-lifecycle fault without restarting unrelated services.
08Resilience and configuration handover
+
- Define change validation, rollback triggers and service recovery checks.
- Distinguish availability design from an untested failover claim.
Practical exerciserun a failure-and-recovery exercise for the isolated application project.

From understanding to application.
Progress by learning milestone. The schedule is agreed around your starting level and learning goals.
- 01Learning milestone 1 In progress
Understand the operating layers
Modules 1–2: boot and unit behaviour
Explain a failure at the correct system layer. - 02Learning milestone 2 In progress
Control resources and data
Modules 3–4: isolation and storage
Measure and validate controlled resource changes. - 03Learning milestone 3 In progress
Integrate and diagnose
Modules 5–7: networks, identity and tracing
Resolve faults using evidence rather than broad restarts. - 04Learning milestone 4 In progress
Prove recoverability
Module 8 and the multi-service project
Demonstrate rollback and document the architecture.
