About this course

Build an Ubuntu server around APT, Netplan, OpenSSH, UFW and AppArmor. The course covers Ubuntu package maintenance, network configuration, service hosting and recovery rather than reusing a generic Linux syllabus.

Who this is for

Administrators, application developers and small-platform teams responsible for Ubuntu servers.

Before you start

Linux shell and file-permission knowledge plus basic IP networking. An Ubuntu Server lab VM is required.

Applied learning outcome

Deploy an Ubuntu web server with automated updates and a tested restore

Configure APT maintenance, a Netplan network, key-based SSH, a restricted firewall and a web service; back up the application data and demonstrate its restoration.

Course content

8 modules · 8 topics

Course-specific syllabus and practical exercises. Lab release, access arrangements and final delivery scope are confirmed before enrolment.

01

Ubuntu installation and release planning

  • Select an Ubuntu Server release and review its support lifecycle.
  • Understand installer choices, host identity and basic cloud-init concepts.

Practical exerciseinstall a server VM and document its release and initial state.

02

APT, dpkg and update maintenance

  • Inspect package sources, dependencies and installed files.
  • Plan unattended-upgrades and controlled release-upgrade testing.

Practical exerciseinstall a service, inspect update configuration and record a maintenance plan.

03

Netplan and name resolution

  • Read YAML network definitions and identify the active renderer.
  • Configure addresses, routes and DNS with a safe validation and recovery procedure.

Practical exerciseapply a persistent network change without losing lab access.

04

OpenSSH, accounts and UFW

  • Configure SSH key access and delegated administration.
  • Define UFW rules while retaining the approved management path.

Practical exercisepermit SSH and the intended web port, then validate the exposed sockets.

05

Service hosting on Ubuntu

  • Manage systemd units and inspect logs for an Ubuntu service.
  • Configure a simple Nginx or Apache site and review file ownership.

Practical exercisepublish a test page and diagnose an intentionally incorrect service setting.

06

AppArmor profiles and denials

  • Distinguish profile enforcement from complain-mode diagnostics.
  • Inspect profile status, interpret denied operations and test a scoped policy change.

Practical exercisediagnose an AppArmor-related access failure in an isolated application example.

07

Storage, backups and restore

  • Configure a filesystem mount and review LVM use in the lab.
  • Prepare file backups and restore application configuration and content.

Practical exerciserecover a deleted web-content directory and verify service behaviour.

08

Ubuntu operating runbook

  • Combine package, network, service and security checks into a maintenance routine.
  • Plan configuration rollback and document release-specific assumptions.

Practical exercisereboot the completed server and demonstrate its backup and recovery workflow.
